The Salina Parks & Recreation Department offers a wide variety of senior based programs. Programs are offered during the week and sign ups are taken on a month-to-month basis. We have everything from exercising to the occasional out of town trips! If you're 50+ and looking for something to do - check out our programs!

A new exercise focusing on vital functions and psychosocial functions with the aim of achieving care (fall prevention, improved cognitive function) while allowing participants to have fun. You will step various patterns on mat including forward, backward, sideways and diagonal movements that help develop balance. This class is held every Tuesday and Thursday weekly at the Carver Center. It runs from 10 am to 10:45 am. The cost is $13 per month. You can register in office or online for your convenience.
Arthritis Land Exercise
What a great way to get your mornings going. This class will focus on low impact exercises sitting in a chair or standing. Hand weights might be used for some of the classes. This class is also held on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Carver Center. The class runs from 11 am to 12 pm. The cost is $13 per month and you can register in office or online.
Martial Arts Classes
Tai Chi I
Tai Chi I is for the beginner to take to get the basics. This ancient Chinese health practice consists of combining soft gentle movements with slow, deep breathing. This exercise is for all ages and is a great stress reliever. Benefits include improved circulation, memory, balance, lower blood pressure and reduced stress if practiced regularly. This class will be held on Wednesday evenings from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm in the Carver Center starting on January 8th and running through February 19th. The cost to register is $17 and you can register in office or online.

Tai Chi II is for the advanced participant to improve on what they learned in Tai Chi I. This ancient Chinese health practice consists of combining soft gentle movements with slow, deep breathing. Eaglecrest Retirement Center Aquacise
Enjoy this low-impact form of exercise that keeps you cool and comfortable while working out! Aqua exercise allows participants to perform exercises while putting very little weight on the joints. Participants will meet on Monday and Thursday afternoon at the Eaglecrest Retirement Center's pool. Classes are a 1 hour session and only 8 spots are available for each class. Class times are as follows: 12:30 pm to 1:30 pm, 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm, and 2: 30 pm to 3:30 pm. The cost is $13 per month and you can register in office or online.
Upcoming Trips & Tours
Join us as we take a Spring Break day trip to Hays and experience its small town charm, big-time fun environment! You are not required to be a grandparent or have grandchildren to participate. We will visit the Sternberg Museum of Natural History, Blue Sky Miniature Horse Farm, and the Ft. Hays Historical attractions. The cost is $65 per participant (lunch and snacks are included in trip fee!) Transportation will depart from Kenwood Cove parking lot at 8:30am on Friday, March 13th. Register in office or online before March 12th!
Spring Mystery Trip
Join us on another trip of mystery that will take us to some places. You will have to guess your trip destination as we travel. We will depart from the Kenwood Cove parking lot at 8:30am on Friday, April 10th. The cost is $65 per person (lunch and snacks are included in trip fee!) Register in office or online before April 9th at 5pm!
Wamego Tulip Festival
Each spring, the City of Wamego comes alive with thousands of visitors, vibrant colors of tulips, and over 150 vendors! The vivacious colors of tulips from Holland are the back drop for the April Arts and Crafts fair in Wamego City Park. Choose your lunch from the many vendors in the park of try one of the special eateries close by. A stop at Sugar Creek in St. Mary's is included on the way to Wamego. Transportation will depart from Kenwood Cove parking lot at 8:30am on Saturday, April 18th. The cost is $50 per person and you can register in office or online for this event.
New Theatre of Overland Park
Million Dollar Quartet is the smash-hit musical inspired by the famed recording session that brought together rock 'n' roll icons Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins for the first and only time. This thrilling Broadway musical takes you inside the recording studio for an unforgettable night of rock 'n' roll. The cost is $80 per person, which includes lunch that will be served at 11:30am. The charter coach transportation will leave at 8:00am from the Kenwood Cove parking lot on Wednesday, April 22nd.
Come spend a day in Concordia with us! We will visit the National Orphan Train Museum, Brown Grand Theatre, WWII POW camp, Sisters of St. Joseph-Nazareth Convent, and the Whole Wall Mural. We will enjoy lunch in Concordia. The cost to attend is $65 per person. The charter coach will leave at 8:30am from the Kenwood Cove parking lot on Wednesday, May 20th. You can register in office or online for this event.
Roxy's Downtown Theatre
Join us on Saturday, June 20th for Disaster! is a new musical straight from Broadway, featuring some of the most unforgettable songs of the '70s. Knock on Wood, Hooked on a Feeling, Sky High, I am Woman and Hot Stuff are just a few of the hits in this hilarious musical comedy. Disaster! will have you dancing in your seat and rolling in the aisles. The cost of this trip is $85 per person and includes a meal. The charter coach will leave for Wichita from the Tony's Event Center parking lot at noon.
Great Plains Theatre in Abilene
Join us on Wednesday, June 24th as we go see Grease which is a 1971 musical by Jim Jacob and Warren Casey. Get ready to hear that we've got chills... of excitement bringing the hair-greasing, hydromatic, hopelessly devoted show to Great Plains Theatre. We will enjoy a Brookville Chicken Dinner prior to the show. Dinner included in price of trip (which is $70 per person!) Transportation will leave at 11:30am from the Tony's Event Center parking lot.
Yoder Heritage Day
Join us on Saturday, August 22nd as we venture to the Yoder Heritage Day! This annual event is in Yoder and will include a parade, music, food, antique tractor pull, buggy races and more. Transportation will depart from Kenwood Cove parking lot at 8:00am. The cost is $60 per person and includes transportation and a meal.
Soup and Pie Supper
Come join us for the Soup and Pie Supper! This event will be held on Thursday, March 5, 2020, from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm at the Salina Senior Center, located at 245 N. 9th Street. Soup and chili will be provided and everyone is encouraged to bring a pie to share. Entertainment will also be provided for the evening. This is a free event, so bring a friend!
Golden Years Spring Festival
Local and area senior citizens are invited to attend the 2020 Golden Years Spring Festival which is sponsored by the Salina Parks and Recreation Department and Brookdale Senior Living. This annual all-day event is scheduled for Thursday, April 2, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm at the Salina Fieldhouse. Registration begins at 9:00am. Continuous activities begin at 10am which includes DJ Cain, awards, recognition, bingo, and dance with music by Triple Play. Advanced reservations are required for chicken dinner served during the noon hour which is $10.00 per person.
